Fawn St Contraflow Bike Lane

August 1st, 2011 | Categories: Infrastructure | 3 comments

Cyclists can now legally travel east on Fawn St between President and Albemarle in Little Italy

One of the last remaining parts of the Southeast Bicycle Network was installed last week in Little Italy. The one-block contraflow bike lane creates an eastbound connection for cyclists travelling from the Inner Harbor to Little Italy and points east along the Bank St bike route.

So, if there’s data to show that riding against traffic in most situations is higher risk than riding in the direction of traffic, then why do Engineers use/allow contraflow bike lanes?  I don’t see the logic of bicyclists convenience vs. risk–and, it would be a confusing message to motor vehicle drivers.

When engineers/planners put in a contraflow bike lanes, then it makes riding against traffic safer and legal; plus it shows motorists that they are no longer the priority.

A contraflow lane isn’t riding against traffic, it is a lane of traffic that motor vehicles are not allowed to use.
